HOUSE TOUR
I came over on a very foggy evening.
Niall & Staci Barrett were kind enough to let me take pictures of their mid-century California ranch home. Their house had been remodeled in a craftsman style during the 80's. And in 2006, the Barretts saw the potential, purchased it and remodeled the home back to clean modern lines.
The thing I am most obsessed about with this house is the landscaping. It is done by Eric Olsen who I have great admiration for. He owns a remodeled mid-century in our tract and it is super cool (maybe a tour someday?).
Niall & Staci added an outdoor kitchen to the interior patio. The patio wraps around the living room & dining room as well as the master bedroom. Can you see the fog rolling around the Hollywood Twisteds?
The grey and white concrete benches with pops of orangey red are fantastic. Perfect for a grey Southern California evening.
Well equipped outdoor cooking area.
Rustic industrial look to the patio furniture.
This is a fire feature. But it has turned into a sandbox and is never used for fire anymore. Niall & Staci have two young children, Keira, 2.5 years, and Ronan, 5 months.
On to the house. The living room is show place perfect.
The fireplace is covered in white marble brick. Cool effect.
Extra comfy chair.
Orchids!
Living room as seen from the dining room.
Cute photographer's assistant.
Now, a few words from Staci. We borrowed the format from Apartment Therapy (a little).
- Location: Newport Beach, California.
- Year Built: 1965
- Years Lived In: 7 years
- Size: 2,200-square-feet (downstairs) and 400-square-feet (granny unit), 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, the kicker grandma unit is over the two-car garage.
- What did you remodel? Wood floors, master and guest bathrooms, 2 bedroom window box seats, kitchen color/counter tops, and the entire outside
- Did you have hire an interior designer or architect? No on the interior
- Landscape Architect: Eric Olsen
Here is the Barrett's kitchen. The cabinets are original to the 80's craftsman remodel by the previous owners. The Barretts simply made do and painted over the cabinets in a light grey color. The counter-top was added purposefully thick to raise the counters (Caeserstone, I believe). Niall & Staci are tall!
The lighting started to go all wonky on me at this point. (Note to self, get photographer's lighting for dusk interior shoots or use lighting hacks from Digital Photography School). Here is the island with the bar refrigerator.
And the sub-zero.
Staci turned the lights on for me to see the top of the cabinets. The inside is still the caramel-colored 80's craftsman stain.
More from Staci regarding
remodeling and decorating:
- Our style: Modern comfortable
- Our inspiration: Neutral simplistic designs
- Favorite element: Inside - family room cabinet, Outside - open space
- Biggest remodeling challenge: completely redoing master bath
- Biggest embarrassment in your home (keeping it real): Hallway kids bathroom, cracks in ceiling (no photos please)
- Best advice for remodelers: Monitor the work closely
- Favorite sources: BigDaddy's in Los Angeles
- Dream sources: ABC Home Store in NYC
- How has being a mom changed your decorating style? I added a lot of color to the kids rooms compared to the rest of the house
- Any regrets about choices you made in decorating prior to kids, now that you have kids? All tan or white furniture
Staci's favorite feature: the beautiful built-in cabinet is the family room focal point.
Lighting changes everything.
Powder room off the living room. Faucets in the wall, like on the Dwell Home Tour. I love that!
Recessed niche for pictures, built by the Barretts.
Kiera's room is charming.
And the baby's room is appropriately chic.
A modest master. Typical mid-century, efficient and stylish. Love the upholstered headboard!
The master bath renovation ... fabulous! I love bathrooms!
And some parting shots of the yard, with the landscaping lights on. Can you see the fog up in the trees?
I was just coming off a terrible Pottery Barn phase when I was first introduced to Staci and her beautiful home. I was impressed by her sense of style and confidence. It inspired me to be just a little bit more bold with my decorating choices as well.

What a gorgeous home! I love the lighted cabinet, and the master bath is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI love the lighted cabinet too. Lighting is always so important as almost the final component in decorating decisions. Or perhaps the icing on the cake. Happy Thanksgiving Dana!
DeleteHi Rebecca, the Barretts home is lovely. We inherited similar caramel coloured kitchen cupboards too (Tasmanian oak) I hate them, but now is not the time to attack them with a paint brush!
ReplyDeleteI am so going to copy the taps ala dwell idea when we do our bathroom - it looks good and it makes perfect sense too.
Isn't it charming?! My friend Stacey said she HATED the color of the cabinets and out came the paint brushes. The grey look cool I think. She did it way before it was the cool color.
