Typical, back-in-the-day, mid-century modern bathroom
counter tops were some sort of cool pastel shade like pink or turquoise. Learn more about pink
retro bathrooms at
savethepinkbathrooms.
You can also see
hundreds of pink bathrooms here. For our remodel, we committed mid-century modern
blasphemy and demo’d
our retro bathrooms including their pastel counter tops. All the mid-century modern preservationists will probably hate us,
but honestly, our bathrooms were nothing special. Cramped tiny bathrooms with soft
pastel tile. I admit it, for the first ten years I thought they were cool and retro chic, but eventually both the bathrooms' tiny size and the decaying state of the tile drove me crazy. It was either restore the tile or do over.

We opted with expand and do over plus the addition of a third bathroom attached to our son's room. For the new counter tops, we went with traditional white, which was actually pretty common in mid-century modern
kitchens.
We chose the durable and modern
Ceaserstone rather than the more authentic
Formica. Hopefully the preservationists will forgive us. And our counter tops got installed last week! Do you see any similarity between the picture above and the bathrooms below? Scary, isn't it?

Counter for days! Purposefully skipped the double sinks so popular
in the McMansions, in favor of a gigantic counter. |

Look at the fabrication of this shower threshold. "The tile guy," is amazing. |
Should we have preserved the retro flare of the pastel counter tops? Or was 21st century modern in order?
